Mary Beth Evans made her debut on Days of Our Lives in 1982, and along the way she’s made Kayla a daytime fixture, while she’s become a television icon herself. She won Daytime Emmy Awards (including three in one year), as she’s spread her wings to other media.
Are you just about ready for Covid-19 to just go away?
I get a little anxious sometimes, but i just re-commit to staying the course and staying safe with masks, social distancing and all that.
How much has it turned your life upside down?
It has made me slow down. i was always running around, and now i pretty much stay home.
Your family has been able to somewhat quarantine together?
Somewhat. My daughter, husband and new baby are close by. we are also very careful, so we see them everyday – it makes the whole quarantining bearable.
This is a difficult time to be a new grandmother?
We have two grandchildren who live in Mexico and that has been difficult because we don’t feel comfortable
traveling. We do Facetime and see lots of pictures. But, Luca we see everyday and that has been great.
You certainly haven’t disappointed your longtime DAYS fans with great performances.
We are so lucky because days is so far ahead and we still have first run shows. I love days of our lives and never take my part in it for granted.
Could you ever imagine that DAYS being so far ahead, which was unheard of, would be such a great gift to fans during this time?
I know, it’s crazy!
When you watched the wedding scenes, did you think back to how calm life was when you taped it?
Well, even in a room with that many people and …..kissing! I don’t know what the new normal will be. We will need to adapt.
Over the years, we’ve watched you as proud mom to three children, as they grew up in front of our eyes. What is one quality of each Matthew, Katherine, and Daniel that you’d like us to know?
They are very loving and kind.
How are the three so different from each other?
Danny has always been impulsive – and Matthew is not. One spends every penny – one saves it all. Katie is very solid, always needs a plan, and works so hard to make it happen. she sets the bar for all of our behavior.
When is the last time you did something just for you for the day?
Middle of February.
If your husband took you to the airport and put you on an international flight for a secret vacation, where do you hope the plane in headed?
Amalfi coast, but he needs to come too!
OK, back to reality, are you excited to head back to work?
I can’t wait!
You’re actually filming The Bay before you head to Salem?
And, still figuring how to do it properly with social distancing.
Have you gotten over your winning three Emmy’s in 2016?
It’s pretty great – and don’t think that will happen again.
It was such an exciting night, winning for the role that has made you a daytime icon, and then you win for lead acting on the digital soap, which has come along over the years to be the most accomplished in the field – and you’re a producer, too!
I feel so fortunate.
OK, what is your primary duty as producer – do they pick your brain on all the drama you’ve been a part of for almost 35 years?
Well, not exactly!
Could you imagine ever not going to the studio to act, and being a full time grandmother?
I will always try to keep working. fortunately, they are not mutually exclusive. I still want to do it all!
Have you ever taken Amtrak anywhere, do you enjoy the peace in riding the rails?
I took trains all over Europe and i loved it. and, i have taken the Amtrak Surfliner here in la to San Diego and thought it was great.
What is the last thing you thought you’d ever say in an interview?
Wear a mask!
